Peñafiel was a very important medieval town because of its strategic location. The village was surrounded by a fortress wall over two kilometers long with five gates. Only a few segments of the wall remain nowadays.
In the heart of the wine region, the castle of Peñafiel is one of the most impressive in Castilla. It houses the wine museum.
Its main monument is the castle, one of the key Christian fortresses of the Medieval times. The present building is from 1456 and in 1917 it was declared a National Art Monument. It is 200 meters long and its tower is 30 meters tall.
Inside the castle is the Wine Museum, rather relevant since this is the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region. The museum explains the origin of wine production in the area and displays many archaeological artifacts related with wine. It is possible to climb the tower and explore the rest of the castle, enjoying the wonderful views of the wine region.
There are other important monuments in the town, such as the Convent of San Pablo, the Coso ring, a plaza that is still used for bullfights, the church of San Miguel, the convent of Santa Clara and a few streets of what used to be the Jewish quarter.
The fiestas in August are well known, as well as the “Angel’s parade”, the fair and the weekly market.
The town has nearly 6,000 people.
