Carrión de los Condes, in the province of Palencia, is a landmark town in the Saint James’ Way, favorite rest stop for pilgrims and a place visited by those interested in Romanesque architecture.
To take a walk through its streets and plazas is like touring a catalogue of the most important architectural styles.
The Saint James’ museum, in the church of the same name holds many masterpieces from former monasteries, convents and churches in the region.
The town’s most celebrated building is the Monastery of San Zoilo, a complex that combines different architectural styles, ranging from the Romanesque to the Baroque and the Plateresque, of which, and the cloister is the finest example in the region. The Monastery has been carefully restored and it is now a hotel.
There is a splendid recreational area by the Carrión river, a meeting place for local families and pilgrims. There is a swimming area, picnic grounds and more. It has about 2,400 inhabitants.
