Segovia is the capital of the province of the same name. It is very near Madrid and is one of the most visited cities of Spain.

UNESCO appointed it as a World Heritage Site and it keeps three great monuments that give a unique character to the city.

The oldest one is the Roman aqueduct, an engineering marvel that still works and that was built at the end of the first century. It has a total of 167 arches.

If we walk from the aqueduct to the center of the city, we find the Cathedral that was concluded in 1768, after more than 200 years of work. It is called the “Dame of Cathedrals” because of its design, Baroque, and its tower is one of the tallest in Spain.

The third monument is the Alcazar, a castle built on top of a hill in the point where the Eresma river meets with the Clamores river. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it has been restored and enlarged several times. Its present aspect was decided by the king Phillip 2nd. The Royal Family lived in this castle many times and it was one of the most elegant castles of the 15th century. In 1931 it was declared a national monument.

There are many more monuments in Segovia. The old town has several Romanesque churches, museums, galleries, plazas, towers and many picturesque streets. The city has been used for many international films.

Around the Plaza Mayor there are many crafts and souvenir shops and the pastry shops of the area offer their own versions of the traditional dessert, the “Ponche Segoviano”

In fact, cuisine is one of the key elements of the city. Roasted suckling pig and kidney beans are part of the traditional Segovian menus and you can taste them in almost any restaurant and tavern of the city.
