MUSEUM – HOUSE OF ZORRILLA
The famous writer Jose Zorrilla lived in Valladolid and it is possible to visit the house in which he spent the first seven years of his life. In the house, only a few steps away from our headquarters of Plaza San Pablo, we can see personal memorabilia of the poet, donated by his widow, Mrs. Juana Pacheco, as well as objects and furniture that have been acquired to recreate the interiors at the time he lived there as well as the actual desk he used, many diplomas, among them, his appointment to the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language, part of his personal library, a bronze crown offered by the City Hall of Barcelona for his crowning as National Poet at the Alhambra of Granada in 1889 and a funeral mask.
This is not only a museum because the house is also the headquarters of the Book Fair and it has one of the most important libraries of Spain in philology, theater and history.
During the summer, the garden is the site of theater plays, poetry readings and music concerts.
Jose Zorrilla is a very well known author, especially for his play “Don Juan Tenorio”. Among his works there are other theater plays and several poetry books. He was a reader for Emperor Maximilian I and Director of the National Theater of Mexico. He also was a member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language and official chronicler of the city of Valladolid. He was named “National Poet” in 1889.
He died in Madrid on January 23, 1893. In 1986 his remains we brought to Valladolid, to fulfill his last will. He is buried at the Illustrious Citizens Cemetery.
The students in the Language and Culture courses of the Center of Hispanic Studies enjoy a guided visit of the museum and in the summer they attend the activities held in the house and garden.
